Bikeability

Some pupils have been taking part in bikeability over the past two weeks.

They have learnt how to ride safely on the road, as well as how to do U-turns and left and right turns from and to minor and major roads. Most importantly, the children learned who has right of way.

They found bikeability great fun and a really useful thing to do.

Football News - Year 3/4

On 2nd March Sherwell Valley Year 3 and 4 boys played football against St. Margaret's and won 9 - 0!!

The ShelterBox Trustees gratefully acknowledge your generous sponsorship.

World Book Day Thursday 4th March.

For World Book Day this year, we were lucky to receive a visit from the author- John Dougherty. John spent time reading some of his books and answering everyone’s questions about what it’s like to be an author and how to go about becoming one. After school, lots of children bought books written by John and were thrilled to have them signed!

During the rest of the day, the children were busy planning and writing their own stories which are to be published. We learnt from John that we are all authors and soon we will all be authors who have published a book!

Space Odyssey

Children from our Reception and Year 2 classes have enjoyed a visit to the Space Odyssey Dome (set up in the Junior Hall) this week.

They learnt more about space and the planets and thoroughly enjoyed the night sky experience.

2010 Inter-House Spelling Bee

Once again the spelling challenge, which was organised by Miss Rodgers and Mr Taylor, was a great success for both the Infant and Junior departments. Well done to the children and adults who represented their respective house teams. Everyone had great fun; the winning team for the Infants was Sapphire and there was a tie between Ruby and Amber for the Juniors.

What a great way to promote spelling!

Internet Safety Day

It was Internet Safety day on Tuesday 9th February.

In the past week we have been promoting staying safe on the Internet. Some children have watched a safety cartoon about Lee and Kim, whilst others have been finding out about the SMART rules.

If you would like to find out more about keeping your children safe when using the Internet, please use the link below:

5A go to London

As a result of Molly's competition entry to reduce Global Warming (see post 8.1.2010), 5A left from school at 7:00 am on Monday morning.
They went to the Houses of Parliament where they met Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, who ran a question and answer session with them whilst Molly took the role of Speaker. After a tour of Westminster, 5A watched the opening of Parliament and the Speaker parade at 2:30pm.
This was followed by dinner at TGI Friday's!!

What an exciting day!

There was an article about Molly's win in the Herald Express on 4th February and it will be in the National Geographic Kids magazine on 10th February.

Well done, Molly.

Homework

To avoid bringing homework into school on either a memory stick or CD/DVD, which will need to be scanned and could get lost; please email your child's homework to:

If you are using Microsoft Office 2007, please ensure that this is converted to Microsoft Office 2003 before sending.

Shelter boxes for Haiti

A big thank you to everyone who has donated to our collection for the Shelterbox appeal for Haiti. So far we have raised in excess of fifteen hundred pounds.
That's fantastic!
Here we are dressed in blue and red (the main colours in the flag for Haiti) at assembly time, this morning.

Congratulations Molly!

You may like to share our good news that Molly in Year 5 has won a competition in the National Geographic Kid's Magazine. The competition was to write down a way to slow down global warming. Her entry was to have two poles at the end of each street with a solar panel on top, which absorbs the sun's rays to power the street lamps at night.

The prize is an all expenses paid trip for her whole class to go to London. They will hear Molly have her say in the Houses of Parliament and also have a guided tour.

Her class are extremely excited and very proud of her as of course is the whole school.

A Message from Mr Chamberlain

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term at Sherwell Valley. We have a hard
working team of adults in school and a super group of children. It has been
good to meet so many parents who are thoroughly involved in the
education of their child (children)and are keen for them to do well. Best wishes for 2010.
