After winning the Torbay regional competition for the E.S.F.A National ‘Danone Cup’, our Year 5/6 girls headed to Plymstock to play the Devon finals. In appalling conditions, which included minus temperatures, snow, hail, rain, gales and some sunshine, the girls took on Hooe Primary school, winners of the Plymouth district. In a very competitive game considering how cold everyone was, the score end 0-0 after normal time. Sherwell were probably the better side after a rasping Oriana ZS shot hit the post in first half. Although against the run of play late into the second half, Sherwell were indebted to the amazing goal keeping talents of Ellie M who made 2 crucial one on one saves in the space of 30 seconds.

With the scores level, the final went straight to a penalty shoot-out where each side had 3 penalties each. Bravely the girls volunteered. Hooe were first up and their best player missed by inches past the left hand post. First up for Sherwell was Oriana, who confidently blasted the ball into the net, 1-0 Sherwell.

Time for the superb Ellie M to step up again, as she pulled off an extraordinary save denying Hooe a goal with their second penalty. Shannon H knew if she scored, Sherwell would be Devon champions. With one of the finest strikes Mr L has ever seen, Shannon fired a perfect penalty in to the top left hand corner of the net, which led to wild and delirious celebrations from all involved with Sherwell Valley.

The girls now head into the regional finals in Bristol (date to be announced). Well played to all involved and a big thanks to our brave supporters who helped give lifts and provided much necessary blankets and protection from the arctic conditions.

The heroes for Sherwell were Ellie M (GK), Grace P, Georgia D, Molly S (cpt), Shannon H, Oriana ZS, Raphaela D, Leah H and Holly L.
